The Old Cactus Garden is one of Balboa Park’s hidden jewels. Tucked away behind the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater, the garden is at the head of a trail that descends a canyon wall. Cactuses grow amid the stony ruins of what might have once been a Panama-California Expo building.
Now that the weather is heating up, I’ve switched on my air conditioner for the first time this year. While it can certainly be more energy efficient to open the windows, unfortunately, the downstairs neighbors are smokers, and make doing so less than pleasant. Blowing the stale, nasty hot air out of the house only serves to suck in stale, nasty secondhand smoke. Unfortunately, I’m not sure what can really be done about this other than to keep the windows sealed.
