Pfeffernusse

I’ve said before that I’m in the “love” camp of holiday cooking. In particular, baking puts me into a festive spirit. Today, I made something that I haven’t had in many years, those German spice cookies, Pfeffernusse.

I used this recipe, grinding the spices myself (since I had them in whole form for various reasons.) I substituted coconut oil for butter, as the butter had somehow been used up the day before. However, the results were excellent…

Pfeffernusse

The taste is a bit hard to describe. Slightly peppery, slightly pumpkin-pie, slightly gingerbread, and for me, nostalgic. This was the flavor of the holidays at my grandparents’ house. I’m looking forward to having a few more of these in the morning with a nice cup of coffee.
