Today, I thought I would do more tinkering. A while back, I salvaged a Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) from an old, old, old office phone. A VFD is basically a type of vacuum tube that is used to display information. They are often seen in old videocassette recorders, adding machines, cash registers and scales.
I found an explanation of how to build a driver for such a device, and aside from all the tedious wiring, it was not difficult to put together.
Unfortunately, my good old Basic Stamp microcontroller is not up to the timing requirements of such a device, so it only displays gibberish.
