Now Reading

Now Reading: Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut

Just Finished: NA

What ever happened to the book that I had started in my last Now Reading post? I strongly suspect that I’ve lost it, or at least seriously misplaced it.

I am not heartbroken over the matter, though. There’s an old idea called “the fifty page test.” If, after reading the first fifty pages of a book, you find yourself bored, disinterested or otherwise disengaged from the work, you should simply stop there and find something more enjoyable to read. Of course, I disregarded this advice. I tried to soldier on and probably somehow subconsciously disposed of the book.

Well, it was probably just not time for me to try to read a serious non-fiction book, but it could be time for me to read a non-serious science-fiction book.

Coincidentally, the 2011 Sci Fi Experience runs from January 1 to February 28. It is less of a traditional reading challenge and more of an “opportunity to get together as a community and share a love of science fiction,” as the organizer puts it. I’m looking forward to the experience.

  1. I’m glad that you are taking part in the Experience and hope you enjoy whatever you choose to read during the next couple of months.

  2. I usually give a book 25-30 pages before setting it aside (or donating/selling it). Unless the book strikes me as terrible after 5 pages. That’s only happened a handful of times. Luckily, they were library books so I didn’t waste any money on them.
