Join Us, Rapunzel!

Things were not going as planned. Yes, Rapunzel had tied her hair to the ship, but the Sirens had brought her a knife.

Today’s prompt is to share “a YouTube video.” Again, another oddly specific request. However, I think it is fair to assume only that the question writer intended for us to share an online video of some kind. Thus I present to you “Bassoforte.” In this video, a broken piano and electric bass were fused together into a strange and new musical instrument.

The end of the 30 Day Blog Challenge is finally in sight. I know that it’s taken me much longer than thirty days to complete, mainly because I’ve just been lazy busy experiencing time dilation.

Anyway, today’s request is that I share “a website.”

Well, yesterday, I discovered a new avatar creator. It’s part of a marketing campaign for a movie called Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Apparently, the movie is about a guy who meets a girl who has a gang of superpowered psycho exes, all of which want to kill him by way of hand to hand combat. So it should be no surprise that all the avatars created by this site are kung-fu ready:

Today’s prompt is to share “a recipe.”

Note that the prompt does not say that the recipe must be for food. It could be a recipe for, oh, I don’t know, non-Newtonian fluid, or glowing water, or something I just discovered, blacklight gelatin.

It might be an interesting effect to fill a brain-shaped mold with blacklight gelatin instead of the usual brain-colored gelatin. There are all sorts of things that one can do with glowing brains. Here’s a suggestion. Make one strawberry, one lime, and one lemon. With the simple addition of a Shatner mannequin, you could create a Star Trek themed haunted house.

He's Not Really Lazy, Just Easily Distracted

“Doug’s latest scheme was to buy the abandoned Catfish Farm to turn it into a resort. We all knew he’d lose interest after a week or so.”

Today’s prompt is to share “a hobby of yours.”

What, besides typing words into the Internet for the possible entertainment of others?

Very well, then. A non-blogging hobby. Wikipedia defines a hobby as an “activity or interest that is undertaken for pleasure or relaxation, typically done in one’s leisure.” Notice that Wikipedia did not say anything about the frequency with which the activity should be undertaken. This is fortunate, since there is a subject that I have a great interest in…

Ooh! Now I feel all motivated and stuff. Now, where did I put that drill press?

Today’s prompt is to share “a talent of yours.”

I had to think about this. What is talent? If I were to ask someone at random to define talent, I’d probably be given several examples, such as the ability to play a musical instrument, to dance, or to sing.

I kind of disagree with this sort of definition. Anyone can theoretically learn skills of this with enough training and perseverance. Anyone can theoretically master these sorts of skills with enough practice.

In reality, though, some people seem naturally to be better at certain things. We tend to attribute this to talent. But what is talent? I think it’s mostly a matter of someone making the correct initial assumptions about how to do something. It’s also a matter of how quickly someone understands new facts and techniques related to the skill.

So someone who randomly picks up a violin and bow in a more correct way than someone else, someone who is able to quickly grasp concepts such as tonality and tempo, would be said to have more talent on the violin than someone else.

Do I have this sort of talent in anything? Yes, but they are sadly not in the performing arts. I do not know how to play any instruments, to dance, or to sing. I certainly don’t know how to lip-sync a conversation. What I do have talent in is making goofy doodles, teaching computers to behave, and inventing witty captions.

Today’s prompt is again to share, “whatever tickles your fancy.”

At the moment, this image tickles my fancy. Two crescents in one sky? That’s the stuff of fantasy novel illustrations. There’s no way you’d ever see two crescents on our own mundane Earth. Right?

Well. Now all we need are some funky sandstone pillars and some scantily clad barbarians, and we’ve got ourselves a book cover.

Hat tip to the APOD

Today’s prompt is that I share “an art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)”

I’d be delighted to. One of my favorite places for photowalking is along Harbor Drive. The Port of San Diego has commissioned numerous sculptures, as part of its Urban Tree program. These sculptures have been placed along the waterfront for the enjoyment of the public.

One of my favorite of the Urban Trees was called Prelude. It was made of metal tubing that formed a musical scale folded into the shape of a treble clef. I took a photo of part of it last June.

Isn’t that lovely?

Since then, the exhibit that Prelude was part of has been replaced by a newer exhibit, which I visited in November and December.
